◎例

2巻より。冒頭の百目鬼のモノローグから。

いわゆる雑訳と若干の誤訳。

おそらく囚人ふたりだけの部屋ではなく、何人かいる部屋での出来事と推測し、”One of my cellmates” と変えた。また、「何度も」の訳語として “few times（2、3回）”とあったがおそらく根負けするほど何度も起こった出来事と判断し”many times（何度も）”と変えた。その他、後半に単語をはしょった抜けなどがあったのを修正し、全体にできるだけ原文に忠実な言い回しに変え調節した。

若干の雑訳と誤訳。矢代を表す「この人」は、公式英語版ではほとんどつねに “this man（この男／この男性）” と訳されてきており、ここでもそのようになっていたが “this person” に修正した。「何人もの男に犯されたいと言い」（現在の欲求）という部分が「大勢の男に犯されてきた」（これまでの過去の経験）と誤訳されている箇所も修正。「何人もの」の訳出については迷ったが、単純に “many of them” とするよりも、矢代の実際の経験に近しい感触のある語だと判断し、公式英語版の英訳 “tons of them（何トンもの／途方もなく大勢の／大勢の）”をそのまま維持した。

ここ以外でも、全巻を通じて「綺麗な」に “pretty” などの語が当てられていてひじょうに違和感がある。なぜか1巻は2021年の改訂で修正されて “beautiful” が使用されているが、他の巻ではまだ “pretty” が頻出しており、そもそもなぜ統一しないのかわからない。

全般に雑訳。「ソープランド」は昨今ではそのまま “Soapland” としている訳もしばしばあるようなので、 “massage parlor” より特有の雰囲気がより伝わるので良しと判断した。ちなみに、アニメ映画第一弾では「娼館 “brothel”」と訳されており、かなり違和感があった。「勘違い罪滅ぼし」は若干はしょった別の表現 “trying to atone for something that wasn't your fault（自分のせいじゃないことのために償おうとして）” に変えられているのを正した。その他、「まあ、そうです」など端々修正。また、この例に限らないが、「女」は基本的に “girl” より “woman” のほうが日本語でのニュアンスや雰囲気に近いと思うので、その方向で手を加えている。

百目鬼の有名なセリフ「頭は優しくて強くて綺麗な人です」の「綺麗な」が “pretty” になっているのを “beautiful” に正した。七原のセリフに誤訳。

2巻より。矢代の後を追って夜の街を歩く百目鬼の内的モノローグから。

若干の雑訳。意味やニュアンスをできるだけ忠実に近づけた。「一途な」は “devoted （一途な、心を捧げた、献身的な）” がベストだと思う。日本語オリジナルでは主語が意図的に省かれており、そのためいっそう抽象度が上がり美しい文章になっているが、英語ではこうした省略表現が不可能なので影山を特定・示唆する、”he” で訳出した。

2巻より。銃で撃たれて救急車で病院に緊急搬送される矢代が、錯乱する意識の中で思い浮かべた内省のモノローグから。

いわゆる雑訳。ラストの一文はかなり元のニュアンスや意味から乖離してしまっているので誤訳とも言える。全編を通じてもっとも美しくかつ重要なモノローグのひとつなので、可能な限り、一語一語の感触までこだわって、丁寧に訳出したいと考え、調整した。
